![]() The second pair of qualities is moistness or dryness. Female, cold elements point downward, descending into the earth. Male, warm elements point upward, ascending toward the spiritual realm. The orientation of the triangle is determined by warmth or coldness, male or female. This is a strongly dichotomous system, where male qualities are things like light, warmth, and activity, and female qualities are dark, cold, passive, and receptive. In classical elemental systems, each element has two qualities, and it shares each quality with one other element.Įach element is either warm or cold, and this corresponds with a male or female gender. Each element is connected with aspects in each of these, and it helps correlate their relationship to one another. Some modern systems, such as Wicca, view the elements as equal.īefore we examine the elements themselves, it is important to understand the qualities, orientations, and correspondences that are associated with the elements. In traditional Western occult theory, the elements are hierarchical: Spirit, fire, air, water, and earth-with the first elements being more spiritual and perfect and the last elements being more material and base. Others call it Aether or Quintessence (literally " the fifth element" in Latin). The fifth element, which goes by a variety of names, is more rarefied than the four physical elements. Alchemists eventually associated four triangular symbols to represent these elements. Of these, four were the physical elements-fire, air, water, and earth-of which the entire world is composed. Then again, the party often surprises me.The Greeks proposed the existence of five basic elements. Then it all comes down to a DC19 CHA check? So maybe Zikran makes a mistake and casts time stop while the bard is in counterspell range. But Zikran won't let them leave with the book, and they won't surrender the book and walk away, so a fight is inevitable. Ok, first he wants to brag about his cannon. What would Zikran do if they try to long rest? I don't think it would save them from the time stop strategy above, so let them long rest? I think he'd want to kill them with his fancy cannon. If he can isolate any two with a wall of force, he and his elementals and cannon should be able to kill the other two without much trouble. If they short rest, stoneskin will wear off, but a time stop before the bard gets into range to counterspell, and he'll cast mirror image, fire shield, and wall of force to divide and conquer. I had him cast his defensive spells ( mage armor, stoneskin, and mind blank) when they triggered the elementals on the stairs. I guess that's fine, but they're all long rest casters, so they won't gain much besides hit points from a short rest. They want to take a short rest immediately. I think the artificer is all out of slots. The bard has 3 spell slots left (one each of 3rd, 4th and 5th level) Same for the sorcerer. They used a lot of resources to win that fight and only barely survived. That made the a series of small easy encounters into one huge one that nearly TPK'd them. The rogue provoked one giant ghost, then more, then the mephits and elementals on the stairs. Rogue, bard, artificer/wizard, and sorcerer. The party of 4 arrived at the cloud giant fortress fully rested.
